5 Claims

Claim of Fact:
The issue of domestic violence is a topic that affects 3.3 million children a year and about 5 million women and men aswell every year. These are horrendous statistics that unfortunately our society has to face in a daily basis.

Claim of Defenition:
Out of the 3.3 million children affected, about 75% of them are psychologically abused while the other 25% are both psychologically and physically abused everyday. Depending on the way the reader defines domestic violence, would be what determines how big the number of abused children really is. If physical abuse is all that matters to the reader, than the 3.3 million will decrease dramatically but it will still be an alarming number.

Claim of Cause:
Usually many children that end up being physically abused happens after they try to defend the parent that is being the victim at the time. This reaction causes the abuser to take out the rest of his anger in the most innocent person around.

Claim of Value:
To me, the issue of domestic violence is very important because I was at some point in my life a witness of domestic abuse done to my mom by my dad. Even though he never laid a hand on me to hurt me, The plain sight of seeing my mom suffer was the worst experience for me ever.

Claim of Policy:
All victims of domestic abuse should seek the legal help available out there for them. Police will ensure that the abuser gets take care of, and lawyers can ensure you are safe and compensated for the horrible times that the victim has had.

  1. The writer used logical proof with the affects of abuse not only children, but women, and men as well. This is an issue that affects a lot of people. This post caught my eye, the writer used self-disclosure, he/she explained how these statistics affected her family personally. She earned credibility through giving her own experience, and also giving us a lot of facts that furthered her/his argument.

  2. Ethos: In this post on domestic violence, the author establishes credibility in the Claim of Value by stating that he or she was a witness to an act(s) of domestic violence between his or her parents. However, other than this, the author does not cite any sources for the Claim of Definition and Claim of Fact regarding the statistics so the statistics could be exaggerated or understated. However, the personal experience(s) stated should be enough for establishing ethos.
Pathos: The author was able to attract the audience in through the statement of witnessing domestic violence in the household because domestic violence is not a funny matter and could and most likely will have a lasting effect on the witness, victim, etc. Not only does the author talk about the wife or husband being attacked by the opposite sex but includes the children who are affected because domestic violence affects everyone associated.
Logos: Despite the author stating the statistics and numbers for domestic violence, the author does not explain the cause of domestic violence but its effects on the people associated around the acts. The author does explain the cause of the domestic abuser abusing the children by stating that the children get attacked when they try to defend the first victim.

The author was able to establish a strong pathos but the ethos and logos were lacking a bit because there was no source cited for the statistics and there was not much detail into the causes of domestic violence. If the author were to do this, the post would be a much more profound post that can have a strong effect on the reader. This does not mean the original post would not have an effect on the reader but if the author wanted his or her post to expand to a larger audience, then he or she would want to “dumb it down” meaning that the topic should be explained much more for the people who do not understand the issue of domestic violence.

  3. The author's ethos lies in the claim of value, in which he/she claims to have witnessed domestic violence first hand. Although the author does not mention anything else regarding ethos, his/her experience should be enough to support her credibility.

The topic itself (domestic violence) is enough for pathos to be established. The author wrote about the possible repercussions, which could possibly harm children. The statistics provided, as well as the author's first hand experience, can easily adhere to the reader's emotion.

As for logos, the author provides statistics to strengthen his/her argument.

With a topic such domestic violence, I feel the author could have done a better job with the use of pathos. Domestic violence is a serious matter, and serious matters are likely to adhere to the emotions of people easier than non-serious matters. The author does a good job establishing credibility, but could have added a little more to strengthen the ethos. There should be more logos as well, with an explanation of the cause, etc.
